Students, staff invited to brown bag lunches to discuss Kansas legislative session

Monday, January 07, 2019

LAWRENCE — Students and staff are invited to a series of brown bag lunches to discuss the 2019 Kansas legislative session.

The lunches will be hosted by Kelly Whitten, director of state relations for the University of Kansas. Each lunch will be from noon to 1 p.m. on a Friday and include time for questions and conversation.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Jan. 25: Kansas Union, Centennial Room
  • Feb. 22: Kansas Union, Forum A
  • March 29: Kansas Union, Divine Nine
  • May 24: Kansas Union, Centennial Room.

For the 2019 legislative session, the Kansas Board of Regents has requested an additional $85 million in base funding for the state’s six universities during the next two fiscal years, as well as $25 million in the second fiscal year for need-based financial aid. KU supports this request and echoes the Regents’ belief that this funding is necessary to ensure state universities can meet the needs of Kansas families and communities and drive prosperity in the state. Learn more about this request and recent state funding history at the university’s State Relations page.

In addition to attending these lunches, the KU community is encouraged to join Jayhawks for Higher Education, the university’s higher education advocacy group headed by the KU Alumni Association. Jayhawks for Higher Education members receive updates throughout the legislative session, are notified of legislative events in their area and are called upon at key moments during the session to contact legislators on behalf of KU. Members can also take advantage of the Jayhawks for Higher Education app.
