David Roediger argues that the end of slavery empowered other 19th-century struggles in 'Seizing Freedom' - Plain Dealer

“Seizing Freedom: Slave Emancipation and Liberty for all” authored by David Roediger, Foundation Distinguished Professor of American studies and history, was reviewed by Cleveland’s daily newspaper the Plain Dealer. Roediger focuses on the bottom-up self-emancipation of the slaves and important connections between slave liberation and the struggles of white Northern laborers and feminists.

The Plain Dealer writes that, “Ultimately, "Seizing Freedom" is a highly ambitious effort that's simultaneously slim, yet dense in places with Marxian analysis and chin-stroking ruminations on "ramifying" impacts and "discourses regarding equality."…Where this book works best is in "telling a good set of stories usually kept apart" and illustrating how freedom struggles can succeed, as well as how they fail.”
